Adaptive capacity is the ability of an organisation to respond, learn and evolve under pressure

Building adaptive capacity is not primarily a structural or capability problem. It requires an understanding of what is holding the current system in place.

A strategy can tell you what to do. It rarely tells you what you will have to become in order to do it. That gap often appears as a structural problem, a metrics problem, or a culture problem. But these are symptoms, not the source.

The source sits deeper. It lives in the patterns the system relies on and continues to reinforce because those patterns protect something.

Those patterns are shaped by the people with power, passed down through generations of leadership. By the assumptions they hold as truth. What they believe is possible. What they treat as normal. What they never think to question.

They shape what gets rewarded, avoided, tolerated and defended. The patterns are the assumptions made visible.

And because those assumptions often remain unexamined, organisations can launch new strategies while reproducing the same dynamics and getting the same results.

There are many ways this work can begin. But it is most effective when it starts with the executive team. With their willingness to examine the assumptions they collectively hold as truth, and to look honestly at how those assumptions shape the way they operate together.

But that collective work can only go as far as each individual executive is willing to go. It asks each person to look at what they personally bring into the room, from the childhood experiences that shaped them to what they reach for under pressure, and what they avoid.

This is not a small ask. But it is where meaningful change becomes possible.
